Tolleson PD Grand Opening!

February 23, 2011

If you have ever wondered what it takes to put together a secure and highly efficient public safety facility, such as a police department, here’s the answer: planning, planning, and…more planning.

Recently, the Tolleson Police Department celebrated its Grand Opening after years of coordinating, planning, designing, and constructing. Concert assisted with solutions such as short term evidence storage lockers, long term evidence storage high-density shelving, high-density records storage, armory weapons racks and steel casework.

Concert Architectural Interiors is the sole Arizona Contractor for Spacesaver/DSM, the leader in public safety storage solutions. Spacesaver/DSM solutions are available through the SAVE Agreement as well as the NJPA to all AZ Municipal Agencies, which are pre-competitively bid buying agreements that allow for procurement without obtaining competitive bids.

Concert’s Matt Gawin worked closely with Tolleson PD’s Support Services Manager, Tonia Rogers, to understand the specific requirements of the facility. A few questions that are important to ask when planning out the storage needs are:

How would short term evidence be handled? Is there a need for envelope drop slots in the pass through lockers? Would sexual assault kits be temporarily stored in the pass through evidence lockers? How would long term evidence storage be segregated? Would the long guns be boxed? How would knives and other miscellaneous forms of evidence be best stored?

These and many more questions were asked to bring value to the facility when working in concert during the design phase of the project with the owner’s team, Tolleson Public Works, pre-construction personnel from CORE Construction, as well as the architects, which were HDA Architects and PSA/Dewberry.

When we started the business in 1998, we selected the name Concert because we work in concert with owners, architects and contractors to deliver best in class spaces on time and on budget.  Other public safety facilities and environments Concert provides solutions for include: detention, evidence storage, 9-1-1 communications centers and courts.

Easy Tips for Evidence Storage

August 4, 2010

If you’re in the world of evidence, you know just how diverse the shapes and sizes of evidence can be. When you are storing anything from hand guns, long guns, narcotics, and money to biological evidence and miscellaneous pieces, the storing process can be…well…tricky.

Fortunately, there are things you can do to ensure you are creating the most efficient and productive evidence storage and processing environment possible.

Below are some “tips” for Evidence Storage and Evidence Room Planning from the Spacesaver Storage Solved BLOG by Jason Konz and from “The Evidence Log” authored by Steve Berdrow with the International Association for Property and Evidence, Inc (IAPE). Berdrow is a 25-year veteran of the Burbank Police Department in California, who helped to co-lead a $30 million public safety building project:

Tip 1 :: Visit others sites, see what works and what doesn’t.

Tip 2 :: Put evidence lockers in the most convenient area: the Report Writing Room.

Tip 3 :: At every possible opportunity, build pass-through lockers into the common wall between the Report Writing Room and the Property Room to save time and energy.

Tip 4 :: Avoid standard lockers with simple “gravity” locks at every cost as these can be easily picked open and will compromise your chain of custody.

Tip 5 :: Use lockers that are constructed to be openable solely from the Property Room with a flippable catch, so you won’t need to worry about keys.

Tip 6 :: Vary the size openings of the locker compartments for inevitably varying types of evidence AND include refrigerated and/or drying cabinets.

Tip 7 :: Consider including one fixed panel instead of a door that can be used to slip multiple small items into, rather than taking up several single compartments (this could hold small pieces of evidence such as photos, drivers licenses, small documents, etc).

Tip 8 :: Lastly, choose a woven-wire gate for the lockers on the Property Room side that allows you to see into the lockers, eliminating time wasted checking for evidence.

What types of Evidence Storage does Concert offer to assist you in creating these preferable storing environments? An endless variety of Pass-Thru Lockers, Non-Pass-Thru Lockers, Refrigerated Lockers, Drying Cabinets, High-Density Mobile Shelving and Modular Laboratory Casework.
